Starting now, university teams can submit their ideas for the international building energy competition.

For the first time, the student architecture competition is coming to Germany, and for the first time it is addressing the energy revolution in the neighbourhood: Solar Decathlon goes Urban. The concepts of the applicant teams are to further develop the urban building stock of the city of Wuppertal. The Solar Decathlon Europe 2021 (SDE21) is looking for realistic solutions on the way to a resource-efficient, climate-neutral city for the Utopia City Campus, a site next to Mirker Stadtquartier.

An international jury evaluates the applicants' buildings in ten different disciplines: Architecture, building technology and construction, energy performance, communication and education, innovation, feasibility and appropriateness, sustainability, comfort, functionality and urban mobility. From the building designs submitted by October 2019, the jury will select 18 teams from the applicants who will take part in the decathlon at SDE21. The Utopia City Campus next to Mirker Stadtquartier will then become a building exhibition.

Up to 150.000 Euro starting capital per team

The new challenge for the university teams is to integrate the designed buildings into the existing Mirker Stadtquartier. Each of the 18 teams receives an entry fee of 100,000 euros and then has almost two years to design, plan and implement its building. If the teams decide to continue their building after the competition on the Utopia City Campus, there will be an additional 50,000 euros.

The final of the competition will take place in September 2021. In addition to the overall victory, the selection committee will also award individual awards and special prizes, such as the Audience Award.

In the research project European Energy Endeavour, the Federal Ministry of Economics and Energy (BMWi) supports the further development of the European Solar Decathlon (FKZ03ET1328A). With the platform Building Energy Competition & Living Lab Knowledge, the Bergische Universität Wuppertal has developed a documentation for the competition. The platform bundles information from past and upcoming competitions, structures them uniformly and thus enables a summary evaluation and comparison.
