The winners of the EnEff.Gebäude.2050 ideas competition received their awards yesterday at the German Federal Ministry for Economic Affairs and Energy in Berlin. The first part of the competition sought forward-looking ideas for climate-neutral buildings and districts. Both new-build and refurbishment schemes were entered, ranging from residential and commercial buildings to district concepts. In order to do justice to the multi-faceted nature and diverse focus of the entries, the jury decided to award five equally ranked prizes.
This competition category awarded concepts for buildings and districts that were specifically intended to be realised. Areas assessed included:
- Idea and innovativeness
- Creative and architectural qualities and the handling of existing buildings
- Technical and design quality
- Ambition, coherence and practicability of the energy concept
- Transferability and multiplier effect for almost climate-neutral buildings or districts
- Sustainability, ecological and economic added value aspects
The submitted concepts show that the goal of nearly climate-neutral buildings and districts can already be implemented in a variety of ways today. The prerequisite for a successful project is to consider the energy goals from the outset.
The jury met on 23 October 2017 in Berlin. Chaired by Ms Barbara Ettinger-Brinckmann, President of the German Federal Chamber of Architects, the interdisciplinary jury assessed the 13 submitted schemes. Five entries were awarded equal rankings and a total of 150,000 euros of prize money.
Brief overview of the award-winning projects:
An energy and technology park is being created on an industrial wasteland in Trier that exemplifies the idea of “reducing demand and covering the residual demand through existing sources”, including by coupling it to the existing sewage treatment plant. The project's innovative nature is reflected in its adaptation to the existing urban planning situation, the incremental technical delivery of the energy concept and the sustainable design of the working environment.
Details on the energy and technology park developed by the Stadtwerke Trier municipal utility company
On a redevelopment area, an energy and technology park is being developed for joint use by the city of Trier and the Stadtwerke Trier municipal utility company. The joint use enables a diverse range of synergy effects. The design of the work and office concepts pursues economic, ecological and social goals to an equal extent.
Thanks to an artificial neural network, the electricity generation and consumption in the main treatment plant shall be regulated in real time so that no additional electricity needs to be drawn from the public grid. The energy for purifying the waste water will be generated on site from sewage gas, solar energy and water power.

Housing project meets sustainability promises
The project harmonises architectural quality and climate protection: the three climate-neutral apartment buildings created as a joint project by building groups are designed in an architecturally differentiated manner. They blend together to form a harmonious ensemble that is integrated into the urban environment.
Details on the Newton project in Berlin-Adlershof
Three apartment buildings with a total of 38 residential units and a small underground car park are grouped around a barrier-free communal garden with private gardens. The buildings will be realised as a multi-generational community to the passive house plus standard. Environmentally friendly materials as well as green facades and roofs are being used. Photovoltaic and solar thermal systems on the roofs and on a facade provide electricity and heat. Key aspects of the project include the housing scheme's return-side integration into the existing district heating network with the injection of generated solar thermal heat and the provision of legionella-free domestic hot water at a low temperature level in the distribution network.

Housing scheme on an industrial heritage site
A listed shed frame on a former industrial site provides the structure for a compact new housing scheme with an experimental energy concept. The project adopts a holistic, socially responsible approach: affordable living space, mixed use and the utilisation of existing buildings.

Most of the existing buildings on the urban redevelopment area are listed as historic monuments. The concept takes into account the existing structures and creates a new framework through supplementary buildings. Its implementation using system-built construction methods and regional building materials is intended to achieve a cost-effective scheme. The structural implementation is set to be climate neutral, i.e. through recycling, the use of ecological building materials and the creation of energy self-sufficient buildings.
The existing shed roofs and the new roof areas in the district are suitable for large-area photovoltaic systems thanks to their orientation to the south and west. In order to be able to store the generated solar power, the buildings will be equipped with an innovative biocatalysis system that can be used to produce methanol from electricity.

The project shows possibilities for sustainably renovating apartment blocks from the fifties and sixties – a building type that is often due for renovation in Germany.
Details on the “Active Townhouse in Existing Building Stock” in Frankfurt/Main
The existing building fabric is being almost completely preserved, supplemented by additions and upgraded to the level of a new-build scheme in accordance with the currently applicable German Energy Saving Ordinance (EnEV 2016). The roof space is being converted into residential accommodation. The apartment floor layouts are being adapted to today's needs and will provide an improved relation to the outside through the addition of loggias and balconies.
The all-electric building consistently avoids the use of fossil fuels and local emissions. Roof-integrated PV systems cover the total energy requirement to a large extent using solar power.

The new-build scheme for the Stadtwerke Neustadt municipal utility company in Holstein places equally high value on its integration into the urban environment as on the architecture, layout and energy technology with a largely renewable heat supply.

The recently completed ensemble for the utility company consists of three sections: a two-storey administration building with an additional basement storey adjoining the work yard, a single-storey workshop facility with integrated vehicle wash depot and storage areas as well as a vehicle depot for the operational vehicles. The thermal insulation quality is based on the passive house standard.
The heat supply for the buildings shall be largely renewable. Heat pumps will harness geothermal energy via borehole heat exchangers. Photovoltaic modules will be installed on the roof surfaces of the three buildings and will also be used to provide solar shading above the main entrance.
